Liberty Mutual Insurance, the nation’s second-largest property-casualty insurer, will phase out its regional commercial brands this year to focus on marketing the Liberty name.

Liberty’s mid-Atlantic brand is Ohio Casualty.

The national carrier, which in 2011 had net written premium of about $32 billion, is retiring its eight regional brands and will market exclusively under the Liberty banner in response to agents wanting to do business with a stronger and more recognizable brand.

“We listened to our agents,” said Liberty spokesman Chris Goetcheus. “They drove the decision.”

In the mid-Atlantic, Liberty does business as Ohio Casualty, operating in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington, D.C., Delaware, West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky.

According to Goetcheus, nothing will change for Liberty’s network of independent agents or commercial customers as the company phases out the regional brands over the next year.

Personal lines business will not be affected.

Home offices for the regional commercial brands will become regional offices for Liberty. Ohio Casualty’s home office in Fairfield, Ohio, will service the current region as a Liberty office. Montgomery Insurance’s home office in Charlotte, N.C. will serve that region.

In addition to Ohio Casualty, The other commercial regional brands include: America First Insurance (Southwest region), Colorado Casualty (Mountain region), Golden Eagle Insurance (Pacific region), Indiana Insurance (Midwest region), Liberty Northwest (Northwest region), Montgomery Insurance (Southeast region) and Peerless Insurance (Northeast region).

Based on direct written premium, Liberty is second only to State Farm. On the commercial side, Liberty ranks third, behind AIG and Travelers, according to SNL Financial.

Revenue for Liberty Mutual Holding Co. for the third quarter of 2012 were $9.28 billion, an increase of 5.8% for the same period in 2011.
